US: Campaign Pushes for Children and Parents’ Right to Quality Legal Counsel
Imprint – November 11, 2021
Since the 1960s, it’s been a core principle of American criminal law – you have the right to an attorney in federal and state courts. Now, a campaign is underway to extend that guarantee to children and parents nationwide caught up in the child welfare system. In a letter last month, more than 200 organizations, states and individuals wrote in support of a proposal in the CAPTA Reauthorization Act to guarantee that “all children and parents shall have legal representation by a trained attorney in all cases involving an allegation of child abuse or neglect that results in a judicial proceeding.”
