NY: Harsh audit of St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services was kept from legislators (Includes video)
North Country Now – September 20, 2021
A harsh state audit of the St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services that was kept from legislators for months found more than a dozen issues requiring correction as complaints against the department continue to mount. The report was essentially a routine audit by the state as part of its regular oversight. The report was particularly critical of the Child and Protective Services where it showed in multiple cases that DSS agents had failed to assess risks, vet allegations, make safety visits, compile information and meet with children and families. A spokesperson for the Office of Children and Family Services noted that it would be uncommon for a report to find no areas in need of correction, but it is not clear to what extent the findings in this case deviate from the average number of issues found.
