Wanting to Belong
A Special Note from Robbie Rabbit: When I first went into foster care, I felt like I didn’t really belong anywhere. Moving to a home with animals I didn’t know, going to a new school, and meeting all kinds of new animals were really scary. Even though Sammy, my caseworker, did a good job of finding a foster family that would take care of me, I still had time when I didn’t really feel like part of their family. I finally realized there are many ways that foster parents try to show they care. In my case, Rita and Papa put up pictures of me and let me pick out some of my own furniture. It made me feel important–like I was part of the family. I can tell they are proud of me and that they like having me around. A few days ago, I talked to Rita and Papa abut how I first felt when I came to live with them. We talked a long time and they asked some questions. I asked them to write down the questions because it might help you to work through these same activities.
