The Brother/Sister Hurt

  • Vernon R. Wiehe, Ph.D.

Recognizing the effect of sibling abuse.
Did your brother or sister always call you names, belittle you, say nasty things about you?
Did one of the other kids in your family beat you up all the time?
Did your brother or sister use bribes or tricks or force to get you to do sexual things?
How do you know whether it was abuse or just normal sibling rivalry and innocent “show & tell?” Does still bother you? What can you do about it now?
Sibling abuse is rarely recognized by parents, child protection programs, or family courts. Few of its survivors identify what they went through as abuse, even when it continues to affect them as adults.
