Sexually Reactive Children in Adoption and Foster Care
- McNamara, Joan
“Often with acquisition of new information comes the realization that there is even more we need to know. This has certainly been the case in foster care and adoption regarding child sexual abuse. First came the difficult awareness that a large proportion of children coming into care, both in the U.S. and elsewhere, are exposed in some way to sexual abuse. (McNamara and McNamara, 1990). The first federal initiatives regarding adoption and child sexual abuse came in the late 1980’s, with grants encouraging the development of materials and model programs. These grant projects focused primarily on preparation and support of families but also explored interventions to assist sexually abused children moving into new adoptive families.”
