When parents send their young children to school, they entrust the children to their teachers’ care.  Trust between parents and teachers, as with any human alliance, takes time and commitment to cultivate, a truism that is underscored for children and adults alike, especially in the first few weeks of school.

For gay parents, schools embody the socializing heterosexual world.  This causes degrees of conflict and anxiety even among the most forthright parents who may appear bold as they advocate for their children.  From the vantage point of educators, the increasing visibility of gay headed families inserts homosexuality smack into the historically protected world of young children.
