Society had traditionally envisaged the sex offender as an adult male living a marginal existence (the dirty old man).  Any acknowledged incidents of adolescent sexual offenses have been classified as experimentation.  However, as more attention has been paid to the treatment of adult sex offenders, these myths have been shattered.
