International: Canada, US differ on boarding schools (Commentary)
Indian Country Today – July 18, 2021
Comparing the histories of Indian residential schools in Canada with Indian boarding schools in the U.S. is almost like comparing apples with oranges. A true comparison is nearly impossible since so little data on the schools and children in the U.S. are available. Unlike Canada, where the 2008 Indian Settlement Act and creation of the Truth and Reconciliation Act helped unlock and organize government and church records, there is no definitive information on the number of Indian boarding schools or children who attended in the U.S. But with hundreds of unmarked graves being uncovered at Canadian residential schools and a new Federal Indian Boarding School Truth Initiative launched in the U.S. by Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, Laguna Pueblo, the boarding school eras in both nations have drawn increasing scrutiny.
