Did you know anyone born in Guatemala is a citizen by birth? This includes all people adopted from Guatemala. In fact, voluntarily renouncing Guatemalan citizenship is not possible. That being said, having dual U.S. and Guatemalan citizenship has benefits and challenges. And the process for an adoptee to obtain their Guatemalan passport and DPI (Guatemalan ID card) can be complex and confusing. We’ll break down the process, the challenges, and things to consider when having dual citizenship.
