Canadians have this idea about ourselves. It’s an advertisement we beam out to the world, the lullaby we sing to ourselves at night. Canada the good, a country built on pluralism, tolerance and equality. Our motivations prove otherwise. As John A. Macdonald once said, “The great aim of our legislation has been to do away with the tribal system and to assimilate the Indian people in all respects.” The story of colonization is a centuries-long effort to steal lands and erase Indigenous peoples.
