Getting Down to Basics,Tools to Support LGBTQ Youth in Care

October 27, 2020 by NJ ARCH Editor

getting-down

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) young people are in
America’s child welfare and juvenile justice systems in disproportionate numbers.
Like all young people in care, they have the right to be safe and protected. All too
often, however, they are misunderstood and mistreated, leading to an increased risk
of negative outcomes. This tool kit offers practical tips and information to ensure that
LGBTQ young people in care receive the support and services they deserve. Developed
in partnership by the Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) and Lambda Legal, the
tool kit gives guidance on an array of issues affecting LGBTQ youth and the adults and
organizations who provide them with out-of-home care.

US: Virtual Hearings Put Children, Abuse Victims at Ease in Court (Includes audio)
Bloomberg Law – July 23, 2020
For all the downsides of courts forced to go virtual during the coronavirus pandemic, judges, court staff and lawyers say they’ve discovered one surprise upside: technology can make the justice system-an institution designed to intimidate-much more accessible for children and domestic violence victims. To be sure, remote proceedings remain a work in progress.

US: 5 ways to get your kids to wear masks
CNN – July 22, 2020
Consider it the Challenge of 2020: It’s likely easier to put lipstick on a ferret than it is to get some kids to wear face coverings. The little humans pull and tug at the masks constantly. Kids don’t just stop there. They let the tops fall beneath their noses and sometimes even yank the things down below their mouths, just because they can. Despite all these protests from children in countries where face coverings are new to them, masks are a must.

US: Let’s Measure What We Really Value (Opinion)
Chronicle of Social Change – July 16, 2020
The Family First Prevention Services Act, which became law in 2018, has set off a flurry of conversations between child welfare agencies and multiple public and private organizations as they envision a bold new world that includes supporting families and preventing child maltreatment. But under the new law, these key players are still hampered by requirements to measure success in a way that subjugates the stories of cause and effect into the narrow parameters of success or failure.

Why is it important for teachers to know about adoption

Why is it important for teachers to know about adoption
Adoption can be a wonderful outcome for children who are not able to live with their birth parents. However, when adopted children join their new family, they bring life experiences that might include maltreatment and/or trauma. As a result, during the time leading into adoption and after the adoption is finalized, these children might exhibit some unique behaviors in the classroom. Therefore, it is important for educators to understand the reasons underlying the behaviors versus solely focusing on the behaviors.

Canada: Ottawa backed away from commitment to approve child welfare lawsuit, lawyer says
CBC News – January 25, 2020
Ottawa is balking at a pledge to consent to the certification of a proposed class action lawsuit over First Nation child welfare – less than two months after the justice and Indigenous services ministers publicly said the federal government wanted to settle the case, according to one of the lawyers on the file. Justice Canada informed lawyers handling the proposed class action via email Thursday evening that Ottawa was not ready to consent to the certification of the lawsuit, said David Sterns, a lawyer with Toronto-based Sotos LLP, one of three firms handling the litigation.
