Until now, it has been the preference of governments to remove First Nations children from their communities and culture. Keeping at-risk First Nation children at home has been a hard thing to do. That’s because finding a better alternative has been even harder. By all indicators, Tuesday’s signing ceremony at Cowessess – that committed $38.7 million over two years to support the First Nation taking over child protection services – suggests we may finally be getting it right. Stemming from a 2019 change in the federal child welfare law that required exhaustive work for First Nations leaders across the country, Cowessess has now become the first First Nation in Canada to truly take over child protection services.
