Schools are tasked not only with educating and socializing children, but also with providing safety, consistency in relationships, and identifying resources to address a variety of needs outside of academic functioning. Children growing up in adoptive, foster, kinship, and guardianship families may have additional impacts on their cognitive and emotional abilities due to the trauma and loss they have experienced.

This unique population is more prevalent than school professionals may think, and they need to be equipped with the right resources to support academic success.
